Abstract

Social media usage has become the most popular tool on the web. There are a billion
registered users for the social networking websites worldwide. This is because, social
media is technology that has revolutionized the way people communicate and interact
in their daily lives. The purpose of this study was to examine the usage of social media
among foundation students as they are considered the Y generation as well as to show
the usage of social media in a campus environment can have outcomes for the
students. Among the objective is to explore the popularity of the social media sites and
to find out the purpose of social media use. Two variables have been used; usage and
outcomes. In this study, a survey was administered to a sample of 185 foundation
students aged 18 to 30 years. The results of this study found that all of the sampled
foundation students were using at least one form of social media website. Findings
indicated that Facebook is the most popular social media used by respondents.
Findings disclosed that there is a positive outcome exists on students’ academic
performance from the social media usage.
 

Penggunaan media social telah menjadi alat paling popular di web. Terdapat berjuta

orang pengguna berdaftar untuk laman-laman web perangkaian sosial di seluruh

dunia. Ini kerana, media sosial ialah teknologi yang telah merevolusikan cara

manusia berkomunikasi dan berinteraksi dalam kehidupan harian mereka. Tujuan

kajian ini adalah untuk mengenalpasti penggunaan media sosial dalam kalangan

pelajar asasi kerana mereka dianggap sebagai generasi Y serta menunjukkan

penggunaan media sosial di dalam suasana kampus boleh memberi kesan terhadap

pelajar. Antara objektif kajiana dalah untuk meninjau populariti media social serta

mengetahui tujuan penggunaan media sosial. Dua pembolehubah telah digunakan;

penggunaan dan kesan. Dalam kajian ini, tinjauan soalselidik diberi kepada sampel

kajian iaitu sebanyak 185 orang pelajar asasi berusia 18 hingga 30 tahun. Keputusan

kajian ini mendapati kesemua pelajar asasi yang dijadikan sampel menggunakan sekurang-kurangnya satu bentuk laman media sosial. Hasil kajian menunjukkan

bahawa Facebook adalah media sosial paling popular digunapakai oleh responden.

Penemuan juga mendapati bahawa terdapat satu hasil yang positif wujud dalam

prestasi akademik para pelajar kesan daripada penggunaan media sosial.
